There are many opinions to the beginning of the chesterfield sofa but no solid evidence to its creation. It is widely believed that the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, Lord Philip Stanhope (1694-1773) commissioned a sofa from a local craftsman- a sofa that would provide ultimate comfort while sitting upright but would not wrinkle the garments. This was the original reason for the creation of the deeply tufted and quilted 'king of sofas', the chesterfield sofa.
The signature characteristics of this sofa is the deeply buttoned and tufted arms and back, equal arm and back height and nail head trimming.
