About the Business
Royal Oak was established in 1977 as Kent Traditional Furniture by Paul and Janet Kent, as the result of a challenge! Janet then tried to sell the dresser made by the local joiners but everyone who came to see it also preferred Paul's dresser, and commissioned him to make theirs too - and so a business was born. Paul was making the furniture in a spare room in the house, but it soon became apparent that a more suitable environment was needed.
In 1979 new premises were rented in Headingley, North Leeds, providing a shop front with workshops behind. With pine in popular demand, by 1982 the business had out grown the Headingley site and new premises were found just down the road in Otley, the birthplace of Thomas Chippendale.
